What helped you become a better website writer?

I enjoy building my website, but writing the content is the hardest part for me. I keep hearing people mention pay someone to write website content when they are short on time, and it made me think about different options. I still hope to learn and improve by myself before asking anyone for help. How did you practice when you first started writing website pages? What mistakes should beginners try to avoid?
